• The Autism Foundation International (T.A.F.I) : Empowering Autistic Children in Kenya

At The Autism Foundation International (TAFI) in Nairobi, vocational activities are a core part of our holistic approach to autism education. One of the most impactful initiatives we run is candle making, a project designed to empower autistic children with practical skills, creativity, and confidence.

Why Candle Making for Autistic Children?

Candle making offers a multi-sensory learning experience that engages touch, sight, and smell. For children with autism, this hands-on activity enhances:

  • Focus and concentration: Pouring, coloring, and shaping candles require attention to detail.

  • Fine motor skills: Tasks like mixing colors, measuring wax, and packaging candles improve hand-eye coordination.

Building Life Skills and Independence

The candle-making process introduces autistic children to basic concepts of counting, sorting, and color recognition. For example, kids pack candles by color, helping them learn numbers, colors, and sequencing while maintaining eye contact and social interaction. These skills are essential for personal growth and independence.

A Fundraising and Community Project

Candle making is also a fundraising initiative, where youth with disabilities create candles for sale, with part of the proceeds going back to support TAFI’s programs. This teaches children about value creation, teamwork, and contributing to a community cause.
