Candle Making Workshop: Empowering Neurodiverse Youth Through Creative Skills

Candle Making is more than just a craft at The Autism Foundation International (TAFI)—it’s a hands-on learning experience and a vital fundraising project. In a recently concluded workshop held at our center in Nairobi, children and youth with autism and other disabilities engaged in candle making activities designed to teach not only creativity and sensory development but also key life skills.

The project brought together TAFI students, caregivers, and volunteers to learn, create, and contribute to the sustainability of the center.
This initiative not only celebrated neurodiverse talents but also generated income through the sale of handmade candles, with all proceeds supporting our inclusive programs.

Educational & Developmental Benefits

Children participating in the Candle Making Workshop gained:

  • Numeracy and Color Recognition: Understanding colors and measuring wax developed early math and science skills.

  • Focus and Attention Building: The process required sustained attention, helping improve concentration and fine motor coordination.

  • Sensory Exploration: The activity encouraged tactile learning through textures and scents.

  • Eye Contact and Social Interaction: Facilitators used the session to foster communication skills and peer collaboration.

Each candle made was not only a symbol of creativity and inclusion, but also a beacon of sustainable support for our educational programs.

Project Goals and Impact

This workshop aligned with our mission to:

  • Provide inclusive learning experiences for children on the autism spectrum.

  • Promote vocational training as a path toward independence.

  • Raise funds for ongoing and future programs at TAFI.

Through this project, TAFI demonstrated that with the right environment, children and youth with autism can learn, create, and earn.
